20. yüzyıl dünyasının efsanevi keman virtüözü olarak anılan David Oistrakh’nin serüveni henüz beş yaşında iken devlet memuru olan babasının kendisine aldığı oyuncak keman ile başlar..
Rus Devrimi zamanında başlayıp, on üç yıl boyunca Pavel Stolyarski’den eğitim alır. Bu sırada Nathan Milstein’e hocalık yapan Keman Ustası 1926 yılında Odessa Konservatuarından mezun olur. Glazunov'un keman konçertosunu başarılı bir şekilde çalan ve hemen ertesi yıl, Leningrad Filarmoni ile Çaykovski'nin Keman Konçertosu’na davet alır.
Aile hayatını Moskova ‘da kuran efsanevi keman sanatçısı, Glazonov'un da desteğiyle Leningrad'dan Sibirya'ya uzanan köy ve şehirlerde çeşitli orkestralar ile konserler verir.
Moskova konservatuarında ders verdiği dönemde içlerinde Türk keman sanatçımız Ayla Erduran’ın da bulunduğu ‘Harika Çocukları’ı yetiştirir.

Ve yıl 1935. 2. Wieniawski Keman Yarışması'nda usta kemancı ikinci olur. Aynı sene Mustafa Kemal Atatürk'ün davetine icabet ederek bir grup Sovyet sanatçıyla beraber geldiği Türkiye'de yirmiden fazla konser verir.
Yüzyılın En Olağanüstü Tchaikovsky Keman Konçertosu Yorumcusu
Yıllar geçerken Kraliçe Elizabeth Yarışması ile uluslar arası üne kavuşan efsanevi müzisyen, Moskova Konservatuarı'nda kadrolu öğretmen olur. 1951 yılına dek Batı’da çalmayan usta müzisyen Nazi Almanyası'nın Sovyetler Birliği'ni işgale başlaması üzerine cepheye giderek askerler için zor koşullar altında da konserler verir. Hatta 1942 kışında Stalingrad Muharebesi sırasında Stalingard merkezi bombalanmakta iken Konser Salonu'nda Çaykovski'nin Keman Konçertosu'nu sonuna kadar seslendirdiği söylenir.
Batı ülkelerinde verdiği konserleriyle ve de plak kayıtlarıyla ülkesinin “Kültür Elçisi” olarak tanınan sanatçı, 1959 yılında orkestra şefliği kariyerine başlar. Bu kariyeri ona 1960 yılında '"'Lenin Ödülü"'nü de beraberinde getirir.
Devamen 1968 yılında 60. doğum yıldönümü büyük kutlamalarla gerçekleşir. Kendisi gibi kemancı olarak yetişen oğlu Igor'la birlikte pek çok konser verir. Baba-oğul iki kemancının anısına Asteroid 42516 'ya 1993 ‘te "Oistrakh adı verilir.
David Fyodorovich Oistrakh’ın Repertuvarında Bach'tan Mozart'a, Beethoven'den Hindemith'e kadar pek çok farklı dönemlere, farklı okullara ait birçok bestecinin eserleri bulunuyordu.
Oistrakh tüm bu eserleri, yaşamı boyunca döneminin en önemli şefleriyle, ve orkestralarıyla ve piyanistleriyle seslendirdi.
